Eggers goes to Kona, day four. Ironman
October 14, 2012Today was the Ironman World Championships here in Kona. For triathletes it’s the Superbowl of our sport, the mac daddy hum diggity. It’s the place to be. I have qualified for this race but have never done it. At this point I am far too interested to coach it than race it. In one word…… this race was EPIC. Toughest conditions seen in YEARS. The wind on this bike course, along the Queen K today was apparently something just short of a hurricane.
That’s the thing about Ironman though, it’s not about the 140.6 miles. It’s what happens between them. People go and compare times on courses….. but in truth they get too outcome focused rather than process oriented. They see that the top ten times of the men and women were much slower than years past, yet what happened in those miles was so vastly different.
Our 26 QT2 athletes….. made it happen as we like to say. I have some fabulous pictures of some of my favorite athletes on my FaceBook page, and I will have much more to tell….. but I am shelled. I am shelled and inspired by people and performances and the friendships I am so blessed to have.
I am on an island in the middle of the Pacific with people I adore, supporting athletes in a profession I adore, in a race I adore, in a lifestyle I have been wild about for the past 15 years now. Does it get any better than that?
Life is good.
More to report tomorrow… or today if you are on the east coast….. I haven’t had much sleep since I have been here (but I haven’t needed it. I am in Hawaii for crying out loud). Tomorrow I am going to be completely wild and sleep in until 5am island time. We will run and swim and we are thinking about surfing again.
The next 3 days though are for Hawaiian adventures. I have volcanoes to hike and the end of the world to see.
Stay tuned. We are JUST getting started.
